GOL GUMBAZ | Inktober Day 11

Watercolour wash and Ink on Moleskine Watercolour Sketchbook

This is a quick pen and ink sketch I’m doing of my qualified undergraduate after a long time: of a renowned Indian architectural monument called the Gol Gumbaz/Gol Gumbadh (Meaning : Round). is the mausoleum of Mohammad Adil Shah Sultan of Bijapur. The tomb, located in Bijapur, Karnataka in India, was completed in 1656 by the architect Yaqut of Dabul.

Broken

We are all but broken women
pieced together by the joyful memories
lining every heartbreak,
every belied relationship
and all of the hidden sorrows
behind fallacious, colourful smiles.
We are but broken girls
sprouting out of our own wombs,
further broken with every push;
standing out of monotony
as a lovely mosaic of our own mess.
We are broken.
But oh, the shards are just too beautiful
to comprehend,
to surpass
or to be neglected.
Just remember to piece yourself together.
You’ll be spectacular.

Tried something new today. Background texture using watercolours and household salt. I absolutely love the effect it’s created.

Inktober Day7 | A Poem A Day Initiative on Street of Smiles

The Girl Who Catches Stars in Her Hair

I know a girl whose hands are always full

with misery and poetry, love in vain and abyss infinite.

Yet she settles down to catch the evading stars every night

and because her hands are full

the stars perch themselves on her hair,

so that she may smile.

The Syrian Christian house | Dakshin Chitra | Madras | India

Watercolours and Ink on Moleskine Watercolour Sketchbook

Dakshin Chitra is a museum of art, architecture, lifestyles and crafts and performing arts of South India. There are 17 heritage houses created in well-designed streetscape along with performing artists and artisans exhibiting their work.

This house (circa 1850) is representative of many 19th century homes found in and around Kottayam and its backwaters. The distinctive feature of the Syrian Christian house is its layout, with the entrance of the house leading directly into the granary. Prayers are conducted in front of the granary, identified by the small cross above the door, and not in a separate room for prayers as in a Hindu house. The addition of a masonry structure, in 1910, which includes a living room, separate dining room and kitchen, is a sign of the early westernization of the community and the social trend of entertaining guests in the family home. The original house was west facing with the kitchen in the northeast.
